Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles (formerly Dependency Court Legal Services is a non-profit law firm of around 100 lawyers. They have a contract with the State of California to represent the foster children of LA County who come into the “system” because of abuse or neglect by their parents or guardians. Because all of these cases are confidential, the only way for a person to gain access to this area of law is via an internship. This is a unique opportunity for enthusiastic students! This internship was referred by a member of the Scripps community.

Must have an interest in Children's issues- both policy and practical.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to get personal training in: Interviewing children for court, learning what rights children have, refining skills on how to communicate with other professionals, strategies for negotiation, and policy drafting. It also provides students with a chance to see how a dependency court room is run and learn legal terminology. Students are frequently in the court room setting and are required to have business casual attire.
