Book Chat - Interviewing Tips |
|
Do you have Sweaty Palms? Interview like a pro.
“’It wasn’t [the Beatles’] music that sold them to me; it was their
charm.’ George Martin, producer of the Beatles’ first record.” So
reads the epigraph to a brand new book in our library. Author H.
Anthony Medley is one of the foremost experts on the art of the
interview. And what makes him thus? As he tells us in his preface:
“Because while I’ve conducted thousands of interviews, both
selection and screening, most of the other writers of books on the
interview don’t claim to have conducted as many as one!” This book,
originally published in 1977, and now updated, was the first book of
its kind aimed at the interviewee rather than the
interviewer. It was the result of a need Medley saw in the
market for just such a book and was based on his own observations
from running a videotape interviewing service, as well as practical
experience running his own law firm and real estate business.
The
book is filled with real life examples of a variety of interviewing
situations and covers every step of the process: from preparing,
types of interviews, questions, confidence and dress -- to honesty,
assumptions and mannerisms of speech. Anthony Medley assures us
that “Sweaty Palms will prepare you to enter the interview room with
the confidence that you can answer any question thrown at you, from
your own experience in your own words.” Read this book and see for
yourself!
