Stern Summer Internship (For Pitzer Students Only)
Facing History And Ourselves, Brookline, MA
Description
: Since 1976, Facing History and Ourselves has offered in-depth professional development services; curricular resources; and ongoing support to educators and students in the areas of history, social studies, and language arts. Facing History is a national, not-for-profit organization based in Brookline, MA with several regional offices throughout the world. 

Through the generosity of Gerald and Linda Stern P’07, Pitzer College has been granted two paid summer internship opportunities available to incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors to assist the noble efforts of Facing History and Ourselves.  Pitzer students will work on one or more special projects related to programming and/or development, participate in weekly Facing History courses, and aid with administrative duties as needed.  Each intern will have a mentor to work under at Facing History. 

Interns work a total of 35 hours per week for 10 weeks at Facing History’s headquarters in Brookline, MA.  The program will begin the first week of June and end the second week in August.  The selected students will receive a housing, travel and living stipend of $3,600 awarded in two payments, of which $2,000 is paid up front. Interns are responsible for securing their own means of housing and travel. 

Qualifications: Facing History is looking for candidates with a strong interest in history and education reform.  Applicants must possess maturity and initiative, problem-solving ability, strong time-management, and good communication and computer skills. 
Application Process:
Your application consists of four items: cover letter, resume, essay, and faculty recommendation letter by 5:00 pm, Wednesday February 20, 2008.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The Center administers the Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship, Executive Fellowship, Judicial Administration Fellowship, and California Senate Fellows programs. These programs, known collectively as the Capital Fellows Programs, are nationally recognized. The 18 Assembly Fellows, 18 Senate Fellows, 18 Executive Fellows and 10 Judicial Administration Fellows receive an outstanding opportunity to engage in public service and prepare for future careers, while actively contributing to the development and implementation of public policy in California. The ranks of former fellows and associates include a Justice of the California Supreme Court, members of the United States Congress and the State Legislature, a deputy director of the Peace Corps, corporate executives, and local government and community leaders.

Stipend: Fellows in each program work for 11 months receive health benefits and a monthly stipend of $1972 and are considered employees of CSUS. They work as full-time members of a legislative, executive, or judicial branch office, and are typically given assignments with a significant amount of responsibility and challenges. Fellows also enroll as graduate students at CSUS and receive 12 graduate credits from the CSUS Government Department or Public Policy and Administration Program. The enrollment fees are paid by the programs.

Qualifications: Anyone with a degree from a four-year college or university is eligible to apply. Fellows are selected in the spring and start their programs in the early fall with an intensive four-week orientation conducted by the program faculty advisors, after which they interview with various offices before being placed.
