Pitzer College is calling upon alumni and friends of the College to help us to honor the memories and importance of the Sanborn site by making a gift to honor your alma mater and the cherished memories that it holds for you.
The original Sanborn residence hall was one of the first two buildings to be constructed at Pitzer College in 1964, and was the beloved home of generations of Pitzer students. The hall was named in honor of Flora Sanborn Pitzer, the first wife of the College’s founder, Russell K. Pitzer.
The original building was demolished in 2008 but was replaced by the beautiful new Sanborn Hall, which proudly sits today among the College’s new Gold LEED™ green certified residence halls on the northeast side of campus.
The original Sanborn site is being redeveloped to include a recreation area with an outdoor basketball court and sand volleyball court. The central and southern points of the site will be transformed into a beautifully landscaped Plaza for student orientation and graduation ceremonies. In true Pitzer style, the Plaza will feature sustainable landscaping and benches with murals and artwork by students and alumni. A designated donor recognition area will be established to pay tribute to the alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the College who support this campaign.
Your participation at any level will reinforce the centrality of alumni in the history of Pitzer’s culture. It will also provide a space to create a bookend experience for every student – orientation/welcome and graduation ceremonies every year -- the beginning of a new tradition focused upon the alumni experience. Now underway, this project is expected to be completed by early spring 2010. View the project plans.
