The Fulbright Fellowships, an excellent opportunity for personal development and international experience, provide funding for a year to study and research abroad. The previous record of 12 nominees was set last year. Nominees will be notified by February if they have been recommended by the National Fulbright Steering Committee. Final selection will be made in April or May. "These are all smart kids with good GPAs, but they also exemplify Pitzer's particular educational objectives: interdisciplinary study, intercultural understanding and social responsibility," says Nigel Boyle, associate professor of political studies and Pitzer's Fulbright adviser. "Most of these students have unusual combinations of majors: Dance and Environmental Studies; African Studies and Spanish; Biology and Environmental Studies; Architectural History and German. Nearly all of these students studied abroad in the sort of cultural-immersion programs Pitzer specializes in running. Nearly all of these students have extensive involvement in using their knowledge and skill to contribute something back to local communities." The Fulbright Program was sponsored by Sen. J. William Fulbright in 1946 as a way to build an alternative to armed conflict by providing participants an opportunity to observe political, economic and cultural institutions around the world.
