FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Director, Public Relations (909) 621-8219 Green Party Presidential Nominee Ralph Nader to Speak at Pitzer Claremont, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2000) -- Ralph Nader, Green Party presidential nominee, and Medea Benjamin, Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate from California, will speak on Friday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. in Bridges Auditorium. The presentation, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Pitzer College Center for California Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI). Time magazine once called Nader the "U.S.'s toughest customer." The consumer advocate, lawyer and author came to the public's attention in 1965 with his best-selling book "Unsafe at Any Speed: The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile." He since has authored, co- authored, or sponsored a number of books, including "Action for a Change," "Corporate Power in America," "Taming the Giant Corporation," "Verdicts on Lawyers," "The Menace of Atomic Energy," "Who's Poisoning America," "Winning the Insurance Game" and "The Frugal Shopper." In 1971, Nader founded Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group. More than 150,000 people are currently involved in the six branches of Public Citizen. Nader's organizations were responsible for federal consumer protection laws such as the Safe Drinking Water Act, and have launched federal regulatory agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and Consumer Product Safety Administration. His organizations also gave consumers access to the government through the Freedom of Information Act of 1974. Medea Benjamin is founding director of Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights organization. Her books, reports and articles examine global issues of hunger and inequalities in development. CCCSI highlights Pitzer College's longtime commitment to community service and social responsibility by embarking on projects that blend academic research with hands-on involvement in Inland Empire communities. The Center supports innovative community-based projects by offering research awards and technical training to Pitzer faculty and students, in addition to fellowships for members of the immediate California community. In turn, the Center's community partners present faculty and students with extraordinary opportunities to engage in applied problem-solving activities. ####
