Pitzer in the News 2007-2008 Academic Year
President Trombley quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education
President Laura Skandera Trombley was quoted in the July 17, 2008 issue of The Chronicle of Higher
Education in an articled titled “To College Employees, the Work Environment is All-Important.”
At Pitzer College, “what we heard a great deal when we were planning new residence halls was that
students, staff, and faculty wanted more opportunities for unplanned meetings,” says Laura Skandera
Trombley, the president. “That's why we made all of those buildings mixed usage.” One building in the
college's new residence-hall complex has faculty offices in the lower level, while the admissions office
is in the lower level of another. She says the college is also making more of an effort to create
pleasing outdoor seating areas around the campus, since the Southern California climate makes outdoor
spaces usable much of the year. “We have beautiful grounds here — you get to see the bunnies and the
lizards and, if you so choose, the chickens” that students keep in a vegetable garden behind a 1902 Arts and
Crafts bungalow that serves as a cozy campus center for the college.
