Excerpt
"We joke in admissions that you're either in it for three years or 30," says Angel B. Perez, director of admission at Pitzer College, in California. Like many of his colleagues, Mr. Perez often hires recent graduates for entry-level positions, which involve extensive travel to high schools, reading applications, and leading campus tours.
At first, young alumni tend find the work exciting because of the travel. But many burn out after a few years because the job requires them to stay on the road for weeks on end and to work weekends and evenings. Less-experienced staff members also get discouraged by what they perceive as limited opportunities for advancement…
…Mr. Perez, at Pitzer, says he usually travels for almost two months straight during the fall and for one month in the spring, not to mention recruiting events and conferences he must attend over the summer. On an average trip, he visits five high schools each day, attends college fairs at night, and then plays host at receptions for prospective students on weekends.
"If I didn't travel, I'd actually have a life," says Mr. Perez. "It's not for the faint of heart."
