Pitzer in the News 2007-2008 Academic Year
Pitzer College, a Fulbright Leader, in Chronicle of Higher Education
Pitzer College was highlighted in the October 26 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education in an article about Fulbright fellowships.
In California, 2 Small Colleges Abound in Fulbright Scholars
. . . While Pomona collected more Fulbrights than any other liberal-arts college this year, one of its neighbors has also had considerable success. Less than a mile away, Pitzer College, another small, private liberal-arts college in the Claremont Colleges consortium, has produced 36 scholars over the past four years, including eight this year.
Pitzer does not employ a full-time Fulbright adviser but promotes the program in the classroom. Nigel J. Boyle, a professor of political studies and the college's Fulbright adviser, says that has helped get students interested in the international program.
In the past, Mr. Boyle taught a workshop that included a project to complete a Fulbright application. The demand for that class grew so much that he now leads an open evening session twice a week.
"I do them late at night because I discovered that's when students actually work on these things," says Mr. Boyle. "The night before our internal deadline, I was in a lab until 2 a.m."
