Residence Halls Named Finalist in Multi-Housing News Magazine’s 2008 Design Excellence Awards

(August 15, 2008) Pitzer’s Residential Life Project is one of two finalists in the student housing category of Multi-Housing News magazine’s 2008 Design Excellence Awards. Atherton, Sanborn and Pitzer Halls, designed by Carrier Johnson + CULTURE, were chosen based on a number of criteria, including overall composition, functionality, aesthetics and other special attributes.

The residence halls, which allow for both formal and informal learning, include numerous sustainable building/living features, an art studio, an art gallery, study rooms, a music practice room, learning communities with faculty in residence, and amenities to encourage indoor-outdoor interactions.

In May 2008 Pitzer College was awarded Gold LEED® certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its three new residence halls. Pitzer is the first Claremont College to receive Gold LEED certification for its residence halls and is among the few colleges and universities in the nation to achieve this major milestone.

Winners of the 2008 Design Excellence Awards will be announced in the October issue of Multi-Housing News and recognized on September 19, 2008, at the Multi-Housing World conference in Denver.
