A Message from the Director

Professor Dan Segal

During the spring 2010 semester, the Center for Social Inquiry at Pitzer College will present a wide range of public events that will re-open questions about capitalism and its discontents, in light of the recent upheaval in the US and global economies. We present these public events under the title “Capitalism in Question (Because It Is).” In addition to lectures from prominent scholars and public intellectuals, our spring program includes both a gallery exhibition of work by artists responding to this theme and a “curated concert” of nineteenth and twentieth century labor songs. Unless otherwise noted, all CSI talks are scheduled for 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons.

In coordination with these public events and activities, the Center will also offer its advanced seminar for the Center’s Student Fellows. This seminar provides undergraduates at Pitzer and its sibling Claremont Colleges the opportunity to pursue focused research on topics within the Center’s theme for the year, while interacting closely with the Center’s visiting speakers.

Please follow the links on the sidebar for a fuller sketch of our spring theme, a list of our speakers and artists, and more information about, and the application for, the Student Fellows Program.
