Pitzer Student Brendan Schultz ’20 Wins Davis Projects for Peace Award to Create Macedonian Youth Conference

Claremont, Calif. (April 26, 2017)—Pitzer College student Brendan Schultz ’20 has been awarded $10,000 by Davis Projects for Peace to organize a youth conference this summer in Macedonia.

Schultz’s project, “Bridging Backgrounds: A Macedonian Inter-Ethnic Conference for Cultivating Mutual Understanding and Tolerance,” will bring together Macedonian participants from all ethnic backgrounds with the goal of reaching a common, high level of understanding of human rights and hate speech.

Schultz, a politics, philosophy and sociology major, served as a United States Youth Ambassador to Macedonia on a youth cultural exchange scholarship during his senior year in high school. At Pitzer, Schultz is the first-year representative on Student Senate.

The Davis Projects for Peace program invites undergraduates from more than 90 US colleges and universities that participate in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that promote peace. The Davis Projects for Peace program evolved from the vision of philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis, who sought to motivate tomorrow’s promising leaders by challenging them to find ways to “prepare for peace.”

Pitzer College became a Davis United World College Scholars Program partner in 2014. Last year, Pitzer College student Eli Erlick ’17 received a Davis Projects for Peace award to establish the Trans Youth Leadership Summit in Los Angeles.
