Pitzer College TSA Rules and Recommendations for
Waseda Program Participants

In addition to following the rules in the Pitzer College Student Code of Conduct and the International Student Handbook, the following rules and recommendations apply specifically to students in the Waseda TSA program:

Rules

  1. The program requires that students always carry identification, emergency contact information, and “How to Contact Staff” with them at all times.
  2. Any behavior that consistently places the student in danger of harming him/herself or others may result in dismissal from the program.
  3. Students must keep a full-time load of 4 courses and must take core classes for a grade (not pass-fail.) Exceptions to this rule may be made only in cases of serious illness.
  4. Students must complete two Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI's), one in the fall and one in the spring.
  5. Students must regularly attend the Waseda TSA business meeting scheduled by the program's Academic Director.
  6. Students must have paid all fees and completed all required paperwork (i.e. program evaluations) to qualify for transfer of credit from Pitzer College to Waseda University.
  7. In serious medical or psychological situations Pitzer College will notify Waseda University.
  8. Students must live in program-arranged or program-approved housing. Students are not permitted to rent or lease off campus housing on their own.
  9. The program prohibits students from driving motor vehicles. California laws dictate that individuals always wear a seat belt when traveling by motor vehicle.
  10. Students should not walk alone or ride a bus or train alone at night. A student should always ensure that he or she has a ride home when going out with friends. Students should accept transportation only from known persons. They should never get into a car if the driver has been drinking. Students are not permitted to hitchhike.
  11. Students must inform the program if they plan to spend the night away from the dorm/host family. Students must leave contact information with program staff and/or host family when traveling.
  12. Students should consult program staff before traveling to determine proper safety precautions. Students who want to travel outside the U.S. must inform program staff, sign a waiver before leaving, and make sure they have proper documentation of their I-20 AB form.
  13. Students are not permitted to travel to areas involved in war, areas widely known to be unsafe, or subject to civil unrest either domestically or internationally. Students are also not permitted to travel to any country for which a U.S. State Department Travel Warning exists during their participation in the TSA program.
  14. In accordance with California laws, students under 21 cannot buy or drink liquor, and cannot have liquor in their possession on a street, in a public place, or in a car.
  15. Students found possessing, purchasing, selling, or using illegal drugs may be dismissed from the program.

Recommendations

  1. Students should make every effort to respect and appropriately adapt to the cultural norms in their new environment at Pitzer College and in the U.S.
  2. Students should refrain from participating in dangerous activities while abroad, including extreme sports. They should consult with the TSA Program Director at Pitzer before undertaking activities that are known to have a high rate of injury or accident.
  3. In the case of an accident or emergency, students should first contact Todd Sasaki. They should wait until the emergency situation has been addressed before calling home in Japan. In many cases, families in Japan cannot be of immediate help when these situations arise. Students and the Pitzer TSA Program will notify families once a situation has been rendered “under control” and/or proper medical attention has been given.
  4. Students should wear a helmet when riding a bicycle and insure the bicycle is equipped with proper safety equipment.
  5. Students should not carry large amounts of cash with them (no more than $100). They should be very observant of their luggage and belongings when traveling.
  6. Students should always lock their dormitory rooms when leaving them.
  7. Students should be aware of the possibility of pick pocketing, theft from parked cars, and purse snatching. Most reported thefts occur in crowded urban areas. When carried, shoulder bags should be held tightly under the arm with the clasp facing the body. Students should keep extra cash, credit cards and personal documents separately. Photocopies of passports, student visas, financial documents (Travelers' Checks, etc.) should be carried separately from those items.
  8. In the case of a robbery, students should notify Todd Sasaki, who will assist them in contacting the police (911) in order to give a detailed description of the incident and the items stolen. Students should report the loss or theft of a passport immediately to local police and the nearest embassy or consulate. If credit cards are stolen, they should immediately contact the office responsible for them (VISA, AMEX etc.) and cancel them. If travelers’ checks are stolen, they should immediately contact the bank that has issued them, providing check numbers and details for replacement. TSA Program staff are available to assist students with these matters.
  9. If a student becomes ill, she or he should make an appointment with the campus medical center. Students should notify the program staff if they need assistance in making an appointment.
  10. Students should advise program and host family of any and all allergies, medication currently being taken, medical conditions, or special medical needs at before arriving or at orientation.
  11. Students should use a condom or insist that their partner use one if they have sexual intercourse. It is possible to contract AIDS, Hepatitis B and/or other sexually transmitted diseases through unprotected sex.
