Eligibility Students must be in good academic standing at Pitzer College.
Preparation At least one Asian area studies course in literature or film, history, or political studies is required. Suggested additional general preparation options include: Comparative Politics; Intercultural Communications; Language Culture and Society; Introduction to International/ Intercultural Studies; Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology; Engaging Difference.
Application Pitzer application and any forms required by SMU. (Access to SMU’s online application will be made available through Study Abroad Advisers.)
Program Dates Fall program: Late August to end of November or early December
Spring program: Early January to end of April
Full year: Early January to end of November/December OR Late August to end of April
Required Courses Students must take Introduction to Malay or Chinese language and a course on Singapore while at SMU, and the Pitzer Sakai course Intercultural Learning: Portfolio Writing. Students are welcome to take any other courses from across the curriculum at SMU.
Intensive Language Students should take Malay or Chinese language while in SMU.
Course Options Most undergraduate programs/schools are open to exchange students (except for Business Study Mission undergraduate courses offered by Lee Kong Chian School of Business). Visit the SMU website shown above and select 'Academic Information' for course offerings.
Credit Possible Students are expected to take a course load of 4 credits at SMU in order to earn four course credits at Pitzer. In addition, students will earn 0.5 Pitzer course credits for the Sakai course. See above under Required Courses.
Housing Options Students live off campus in either a hostel or apartment that they find on their own. SMU can provide suggestions. Students receive a room and board allowance from Pitzer.
