| Eligibility | American University requires a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to juniors and first semester seniors but qualified sophomores are eligible if space is available. |
| Preparation | At least one Eastern European area studies course is required before departure. Other general preparation options include: Comparative Politics, Intercultural Communications, Introduction to International/ Intercultural Studies, Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology |

| Required Courses | Participants are expected to take one course while abroad that includes content on Eastern European history, politics, literature or culture, and the Pitzer Sakai course Intercultural Fieldbook Writing Course. |
| Intensive Language | Students are required to take a Bulgarian language course. |

| Other Course Options | The most appropriate fields of study for exchange participants include European studies, journalism, and political science/ international relations. Other options include economics, history and mathematics. |
| Credit Possible | Students must take 15-16 semester units to equal four course credits at Pitzer. Depending on the unit amount per class, students may need to take 4 to 6 classes. In addition, students will earn 0.5 Pitzer course credit for the Sakai course. See above under Required Courses. |
| Housing Options | Students will live in student residence halls and receive a stipend from ISEP to eat in the campus dining hall. |
| Advising Notes | Students applying for fall participation must submit the completed application forms prior to leaving for winter break. Spring applicants will submit the application at the regular Pitzer deadline. Consult an adviser for details. The chance of placement for qualified students is excellent. |
