Introduction
In Fall 2006, Pitzer College and Kobe Women's University (KWU) in Japan concluded an agreement on collaboration in international education with a particular focus on programs for students in KWU's new Department of Global-Local Studies. Two programs will begin in 2007 and will be guided by the faculty and staff of PACE: University and Professional English.
Pebble and Ripples
A three-week intensive English and American culture studies program for KWU students at Pitzer in August. Students will live with local host families and participate in English classes, discussion group sessions with Pitzer and Claremont students, and local study trips.
Here, There, and Back Again
A seven-month program at Pitzer for KWU students interested in the theme of Global-Local Studies. From September through December (fall semester), students will live with local host families while taking English classes, participating in sports, and doing volunteer work in the local community. From January through March, they will expand their volunteer commitment to 15-20 hours/week while continuing their English studies in relation to the issues in American culture they find through their volunteer placements. They will conduct community-based research as part of their English classes. The seven-month program builds on the KWU students' studies of Kobe, Japan by adding comparative studies of Claremont and Los Angeles. Students will bring the research they do in the US back to Japan to present out to the KWU community.
Location of Program
Claremont is a beautiful, safe, and sophisticated suburban community of 37,000 residents about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Its restaurants, art galleries, lush parks, and shops are only a short walk from The Claremont Colleges. Hiking and skiing are available at nearby Mount Baldy. Santa Monica Beach, the Mojave Desert and the cultural, educational, social, and entertainment centers of greater Los Angeles and Hollywood are an hour away, including such attractions as the LA Lakers, Beverly Hills, the Pacific Design Center, UCLA, and the new Disney Concert Hall. Claremont has a sunny Mediterranean climate year round with occasional rain in the winter.
Pitzer College and The Claremont Colleges
The Claremont Colleges in California, including Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Scripps College, the Claremont Graduate University (with its Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management), and the Keck Institute for Applied Life Sciences, are consistently ranked among the best such institutions in the U.S. Each has its own faculty, curricular emphasis, distinctive style, and mission, yet they have adjoining campuses in a beautiful, park-like setting, and cooperate to provide the services and facilities of a large university.
There are 5,000 students at The Claremont Colleges. Approximately 2,500 courses are offered to students in the consortium each year through cross-registration. In keeping with the goal of small classes and faculty:student ratios, Pitzer College has 950 students.
As a dynamic younger member of The Claremont Colleges, Pitzer offers a curriculum that spans 40 major fields and focuses on interdisciplinary and intercultural educational with an emphasis on social responsibility and community service. Blending classroom instruction with fieldwork, Pitzer engages a student's mind, heart and spirit by integrating educational resources on campus, abroad and in the local community.
In keeping with its 1960’s heritage, Pitzer strives to enhance individual growth while building community. Students create their own academic programs in close collaboration with faculty advisers. Pitzer is also known for the quality of its programs for international students, and, in particular, its learner-centered Program in American College English.
