Essay Rules and Guidelines

Slide Shows should be no longer than 45 slides including text and images. Slides must be automatic and can include music. Slide Show must include 400-500 words of original text distributed throughout the slides. (Quotes do not count as original text and should be clearly marked and cited)Each slide show should represent a typical 5 paragraph essay format including an explicit topic sentence, thesis statement and related arguments. Students must produce their own work, using information from other sources where appropriate.
Bibliography must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page. Please refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed.

All submissions must include a printed hard copy of the slide show.
The title slide should state the student’s name, school and grade level. Students should not include their name on any other slide.

Submissions

You must staple and attach the CISEP Research Symposium Entry form to your printed hard copy. Remember to include two CD copies of your essay, including a title page and sources. Mail 2 copies of CD and 1 hard copy by January 10, 2007 to:

Your essay will become the property of CISEP once it is submitted, and will not be returned.

Judging Criteria

The essay must have a clear structure with a title, an introduction, body, conclusion and bibliography.

  • Understanding of the issue (0-35 Points)
  • Ability to grasp the global implications of the issue (0-20 Points)
  • Originality in approach and treatment of the topic (0-15 points)
  • Ability to establish a convincing and coherent line of argument (0-10 points)
  • Clarity and effectiveness of style and organization (0-10 points)
  • Evidence of research and use of annotated bibliography (0-10 points)

Essay Rules and Guidelines

Eligibility

The CISEP High School Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9-12 from Los Angeles county, San Bernardino county, Orange county and Ventura county.

Essay Requirements

Essays should be no longer than 1,500 words, typed and double-spaced. Students must produce their own work, using information from other sources where appropriate.

Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page. Standards of content and style from MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed., will be expected for (1) documentation of sources in the text of your essay (see chapter 5); (2) the format of the list of works cited (see sample page at end of the MLA Handbook); and (3) margins and indentation (see sample page also at end of Handbook). Materials used for research that are not cited in the student's essay should be listed in a bibliography page at the end.

All submissions must include a word count and all pages should be numbered.
The title page should state the student’s name, school and grade level. Students should not include their name on any other page of their essay.
