The Claremont International Studies Education Project (CISEP) is a program focused on professional teacher development at the high school, middle school and K-6 levels in the Eastern Los Angeles County and Western San Bernardino County region. The program is designed to develop teacher leaders through an on-going series of seminars and conferences. Teacher leaders can focus on contemporary educational issues and teaching techniques or the politics of teaching international studies. After participating in informational institutes teacher leaders will relay their new information and skills to other teachers and/or inform policy through participation in international relations conferences. The teacher leaders will continue to attend CISEP sessions and act as liaisons between CISEP, their schools, and the policy community thus creating an on-going dialogue between local teachers, Pitzer faculty and community leaders on enhancing education.

CISEP is one of seven regional centers for the California International Studies Project (CISP); CISP is one of nine California Subject Matter Projects (CMSP). Located at Pitzer College, CISEP is co-sponsored by academic centers at Pitzer College, Scripps College and the Claremont Graduate University.

Project Goals:

1. Academic Content - To enrich teachers' knowledge of technology enhanced educational tools and International Studies content, as well as developing their intellectual skills and confidence in employing what they have learned effectively in the education of their students.

2. Development of Teacher Leadership - To cultivate long-term relationships with teacher leaders who can both model the various habits of effective International Studies education and serve as inspirational mentors to their colleagues.

3. Partnership with Low Performing Schools - To develop, support and sustain collaborative partnerships based on common goals, a mutually developed plan, shared investment and an on-going commitment to improve student performance.

4. Professional Community/ Teacher Network - To establish and sustain a productive, professional environment that will bring together International Studies and World History teachers and committed college faculty so as to foster a dialogue between them concerning K-12 education.

5. Evaluation - To assess carefully and systematically the impact of the various and aggregate program activities on teacher content knowledge, instructional practice, and professional performance.
