Ecology Center & Other Projects

The Ecology Center, located upstairs in the Grove House, sponsors activities, workshops and lectures, serves as a clearinghouse for environmental information, provides opportunities for community based internships, support for campus based projects, and acts as a campus watchdog.

Leadership in Environmental Education Partnership (LEEP)

Whether it is learning about the use of plants by Native Americans or exploring native coastal sage scrub habitats, the LEEP program, or Leadership in Environmental Education Partnership, involves students in a local wild ecosystem.

Green Community Bike Place

Would you like to drive more, about the same, or less?

The Green Community Bike Place provides bikes, locks, and repairs for students at the Claremont Colleges. Currently, the Green Bike project has fifty bikes and is evolving into a full blown bike store that provides students with training in bike repair and organizational management. GB's goal is to reduce the college community's dependence on automobiles.

Solar Energy

Would you like more air pollution, conflicts over oil, payments to centralized energy producers, threats to our National Forests, or solar panels?

Launched by students from Campus Sustainability, Pitzer's Solar Campus Project is still in its infancy. Recently, in conjunction with the Green Community Bike Place, we set up a solar charging station for the first campus E-Bike. Plan are underway in the current Campus Sustainability course to propose solar energy systems the provide much (or all) of the electric energy needed to keep our future bright.

Gardens

Would you like grow your own food?

Located in the John Rodman Arboretum, students and staff work small patches of land every year.

Composting

Would you like more land-fills, imported fertilizer, or compost for a garden?

As part of an Ecology Center team, hundreds of pounds of food are taken from the campus's main dinning hall, composted in bins and piles, and turned into organic fertilizer for gardens and landscaping.
