Two Pitzer College Students Selected as Kemper Foundation Scholars
Rare for One College to Produce Multiple Recipients
In 2005, Jackeline Martinez '08 of Los Angeles and Mauricio Pantoja '08 of Pomona were selected by the James S. Kemper Foundation as Kemper Scholars. The Kemper Scholar Program is one of the oldest programs of its kind. Colleges may participate only by invitation from the Foundation.
“Pitzer College is pleased to be among a select group of colleges to receive this special grant award, and we are particularly honored that two of our students were chosen to participate in Kemper’s outstanding program this year,” President Laura Skandera Trombley said.
Both students cite the smaller classrooms and close interaction with their professors among their chief reasons for attending Pitzer College.
Martinez and Pantoja received annual scholarships during their sophomore, junior and senior years of college and also received stipends for work in major nonprofit organizations in Chicago following their sophomore year. After discussions with Foundation staff, the students were placed in full-time administrative positions where they can learn about financial management, organizational strategy, fund raising and non-profit administration.
