Eight Graduates Named Fulbright Fellowships 2004-2005

Shoni Blitstein ’05 was named a Fulbright Fellow to South Korea where he taught English as a Foreign Language. Shoni majored in world literature and creative writing. He has been a world traveler since he was a child, living with Inca shamans in Peru, working for his food on a Kibbutz, and camping across Norway. Shoni plans to remain in education for the rest of his life. He taught English to the children of South American and Haitian immigrants when in high school, serving as a bridge to American culture; he taught English to Israeli and Arab children after high school; and he was an English tutor during his time at Pitzer. |

Nancy Castillo ’05 was named a Fulbright Fellow to Ecuador to research the ways in which populations there use grassroots community organizations and innovative institutions to foster economic activity and finance their daily lives. Nancy majored in political studies and Latin American studies at Pitzer. She participated in Pitzer College’s Summer Study in Japan program and the African Diaspora Studies program in Ghana. Nancy was also awarded a Coro Fellowship. |

Annalily Charles ’05 was named a Fulbright Fellow to Taiwan (Pitzer’s first ever for Taiwan). Annalily taught English as a Foreign Language in Taiwan. At Pitzer she was a double major in Environmental Studies and Studio Art and has participated in an External Studies Program in Brazil. |

Sebastian Dettman ’05 was named a Fulbright Fellow to Indonesia to teach English as a Foreign Language. Sebastian majored in International/Intercultural Studies with an Asian focus. He participated in the Pitzer in Darjeeling, India, study abroad program. 2005 was the first year the teaching assistantship program in Indonesia, and Sebastian said, “having been part of the first group of students to participate in a homestay and language study in our village outside Darjeeling, we were acutely aware of our role as cultural ambassadors.” |

Oceana Lamberto-Egan '05 was awarded a Fulbright to Malaysia where she will study midwifery in Malaysia as practiced by Malaysian bidans who are included under the title “Registered Midwife” as a result of the Midwives Amendment and Extension Act of 1990. She lived and worked beside Malaysian midwives during her months in Malaysia and audited several midwifery courses to better evaluate the medical climate. An International and Intercultural Studies major, she traveled to Costa Rica while at Pitzer. |

Lisa Okamoto ’05 was awarded a Fulbright to Spain. A Linguistics major with a minor in Spanish, she enrolled at Pitzer College for a number of reasons including Pitzer's outstanding reputation for its study abroad programs,” she said. Lisa traveled to Spain to research the Japanese diaspora there and to seek the answers to questions surrounding the influx of Japanese female performers who arrive in Spain to study the art form of the flamenco dance. |

Leanne Stein ’05 was named a Fulbright Fellow to South Korea where she will taught English as a Foreign Language. Leanne majored in psychology and English and world literature and participated in the Pitzer in Botswana External Studies program. With aspirations of becoming a teacher after her fellowship in Korea, Leanne says she is most looking forward to building valuable skills in the classroom, such as teaching with cultural sensitivity. |

Susannah Welch ’05 was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Andorra, a small country between Spain and France. During her Pitzer years, she studied abroad in Costa Rica. Susanna was an International and Intercultural Studies major. While at Pitzer, she served as a resident assistant, pool lifeguard and a member of the Distinguished Alumni Award Committee. She was also a volunteer at the Day Labor Center in Pomona on a weekly basis. |
Fulbright Awards
Fulbright grants, named for Senator J. William Fulbright, are awarded by the U.S. Department of State for one year of study, research or English language teaching abroad. They are intended to promote leadership, learning and empathy between cultures. Grants are awarded to students, scholars, and professionals. Fulbright amounts vary depending upon living costs and normally cover transportation, tuition, equipment and living expenses.
