Fulbright grants, named for Senator J. William Fulbright, are awarded by the U.S. Department of State for one year of study, research or English language teaching abroad. They are intended to promote leadership, learning and empathy between cultures. Grants are awarded to students, scholars, and professionals. Fulbright amounts vary depending upon living costs and normally cover transportation, tuition, equipment and living expenses.
The JET programme in conjunction with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs places participants throughout Japan primarily as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT’s) to teach English in public schools or as Coordinators for International Relations (CIR’s) to work on international exchange programs in local government offices. A position in the JET program is contracted employment at a host institution with a minimum one year commitment that may be extended up to five years.
Marshall Scholarships, established by an Act of Parliament, are given to intellectually distinguished young future American leaders, for two years of study toward a degree in the United Kingdom. Scholarships provide tuition, living expenses and travel expenses.
The Mitchell Scholarship, named for Senator George J. Mitchell, is awarded by the US-Ireland Alliance for one year of graduate study in Ireland for students exhibiting academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to community service. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. 
The Peace Corps was established in 1961 to promote world peace and friendship. Peace Corps Volunteers work in the following areas: education, youth outreach, and community development; business development; agriculture and environment; health and HIV/AIDS; and information technology. Within these areas, the specific duties and responsibilities of each Volunteer can vary widely. Ask any Peace Corps Volunteer and he or she will tell you that everybody has a unique experience. The Peace Corps provides Volunteers with a living allowance that enables them to live in a manner similar to the local people in their community. Returning from overseas requires some adjustment, so when you complete your service, the Peace Corps provides just over $6,000 toward your transition to life back home.
Princeton in Asia fellowships are designed to promote good will, understanding and the exchange of ideals between Eastern and Western cultures. The teaching fellowships provide a livable salary, housing assistance and medical insurance if necessary. Business fellowships are also available.
The Rhodes Scholarship, named for Cecil Rhodes, provide the opportunity for 32 outstanding Americans to do graduate study at Oxford University for two years with an option for renewal. The scholarship provides tuition and fees, a living allowance and a travel allowance.
The purpose of the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships is to promote international understanding and good will through study in another country. Scholarships for $23,000 are awarded to college juniors, seniors or alumni, to study abroad for one academic year.
The Watson Fellowship provides a grant of $25,000 for promising young people to spend the year following graduation in independent study and travel improve their resourcefulness, imagination and leadership to live in the world community.© 2008 Pitzer College • 1050 N.
