A Note from the Dean

As Pitzer College immerses itself more fully in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation process, one must note that the three themes of our institutional proposal dovetail with the extraordinary strengths of our faculty as outstanding scholars, teachers and mentors.

The first theme, “Linking the Academic with Residential Life,” based upon the imminent opening of our new residential housing, will allow the intellectual facets of our community to be more deliberately connected with student life in the dorms. Our faculty’s commitment to strengthening a residential learning community will provide curricular and co-curricular programming especially designed to enhance students’ social and intellectual experiences.

The second theme “Comprehensive Reviews of our Academic Programs,” underscores the fluid nature of our field groups and the explicit focus on interdisciplinary studies and methodologies as a fundamental component of a Pitzer liberal arts education. Through external reviews of our field groups, we look forward to enhancing our deserved reputation as a faculty of excellence, renowned for innovative pedagogy and ground-breaking research.

Given Pitzer’s ongoing commitment to intercultural understanding and an emphasis on study abroad, the third theme, “Connecting the Local and the Global,” further develops the College’s approach to achieving international and intercultural understanding as informed by the ever increasing connection between global processes and local communities. The pilot project of paired courses begun on Pitzer’s campus in Spring 2007, will culminate in a faculty-guided research project at two of our study abroad sites, Darjeeling, India and Botswana this summer.

A committed faculty of excellence will lead these exciting projects. It is my pleasure to be a part of such a distinguished group of colleagues.
