Social Responsibility
Founded in 1963, Pitzer College was established during a turbulent
time of social unrest. True to its founding principles, Pitzer students,
faculty and staff observe a high standard of social responsibility
by being engaged citizens and playing active and positive roles
on campus, abroad and in the local community.

Social responsibility is one of the six educational objectives
of Pitzer College: Concern with Social Responsibility and the Ethical
Implications of Knowledge and Action. By undertaking social responsibility
and by examining the ethical implications of knowledge, students
learn to evaluate the effects of actions and social policies and
to take responsibility for making the world we live in a better
place.
The Center for California Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI) is
an institutional structure established by Pitzer to oversee issues
of social responsibility on campus.
The Pitzer community demonstrates its strong commitment to environmental
goals in the construction of sustainable buildings and reduced energy
consumption. Pitzer College’s governing body-the College Council-
adopted The Statement of Environmental Policy and Principles to
integrate socially and environmentally conscious practices into
college operations and the education of our students.
Pitzer College was selected as one of the ten founding members
of Project Pericles. As a result of our membership, the Pitzer Board
of trustees formed a social responsibility committee.
Social responsibility as defined by the Board of Trustees is “awareness,
knowledge, and behavior based upon a commitment to the values of
equity, access and justice; a dedication to civic involvement and
environmental sustainability; and a respect for diversity, pluralism,
and freedom of expression.
